“Officers Nguyen and Diaz are here to see you, David. Can you come to my office now please?”

“Huh? Oh, okay, sure. I’ll be there in five.”

David clicked off his cell phone and stared at it. The two police officers from the graffiti incident at the movie studio? What the fuck? He was with Diane and Galen when it happened. He couldn’t help them at all. Unless they wanted him to advise them on scrubbing the graffiti off the wall. But even then JB would be more knowledgeable than him. David shook his head and shrugged his shoulders before turning and walking toward the main building. He was halfway down the road before he realized he was still holding a long measuring tape in his hands. Quickly he turned and hurried back to the maintenance barn, replaced the tape on the wall, where a peg had a painted outline of it illustrating that was where it belonged, and then he jogged up the road back to the house.

David rubbed his hands on the seat of his jeans before walking into Lucy’s office. Before he could speak to her she just nodded and waved him through to Larry’s office then continued typing on her computer. “Thanks,” he muttered and walked to Larry’s doorway.

Omar, his Alpha, was in the office, as was Oliver, Omar’s second-in-command and one of his sister Leticia’s mates. The two police officers were leaning against the side wall, and Larry was sitting at his desk. The room was crowded. David had a terrible feeling he’d done something wrong but didn’t know what it was. Fuck, his wretched upbringing. It was times like this he really wished he’d come from a regular pack and knew what he should do and say.

“Come in, David. Officer Nguyen and Officer Diaz have been asking some questions about the graffiti incident, and Omar wanted you here because your knowledge is more immediate than his,” said Larry.

“Sure,” said David, not that he had a fucking clue what Larry was talking about.

Officer Diaz shook his hand. “You’re David Rees?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Leticia Brooks’s brother?”

“Yes, Sir. Well, half brother. Same father, different mothers.”

“We’ve met your father. After he shot your sister, and again after he tried to kill you,” said Officer Nguyen in a perfectly even voice.

And what am I supposed to say to that? David figured being silent was the safest reply.

Diaz began speaking quickly. “The graffiti does not match any samples of the local gangs—er—artists. In fact, the expert who looked at photos of it said he thought it was the work of an adult trying to copy a graffiti style.”

“The graffiti is fake? How can graffiti be fake? Why would anyone want to pretend to do graffiti? Why not, like, just grab a can of paint and have some fun?”

“Yes, Sir. They’re the exact sort of questions we’ve been asking ourselves, too. When was the last time you saw any of your gang?”

“We weren’t a gang. We weren’t even a real…group.” Omar frowned at David and he got a better grip on himself.
